Brilliant oral history.. I have a cousin who does this sort of research. His name's Radzi Sapiee, and he wrote the 'Berpertualang ke Acheh' series. I really got to know a lot about my Bugis side through him. He's just started compiling research on our Javanese side.

Raden has no religous connotation whatsoever, a Raden could be a muslim, catholic, kejawen (javanese syncretism), hindu or buddhist (quite rare).

Raden in Javanese, I guess is similar to British 'Lord'. For the women, there are variations depending on the court or lineage, it could be Raden Rara XXX , Raden Ajeng XXX, Nyi Raden XXX etc. The founder of the great Majapahit Empire was Raden Wijaya. Nowadays, most Javanese aristocrats have abandon the usage of Raden in their name, since it is irrelevant in today's Republic. Some still do though. And Raden has no religion connotation whatsoever, so a Raden could be muslim, catholic, kejawen (Javanese syncretism), hindu or buddhist (quite rare).
