Hi Andrew,

I found the information you mentioned a couple of months ago, and found it really helpful re: my MacLeods. Actually, the MacLeods mentioned there were the siblings of Duncan MacLeod (George, and also a couple of sisters). I think it's definitely possible that Angus and Anne were somehow related.

I'm hoping to read Camille Dressler's book about Eigg one of these days. It's on my book wish list for sure! I sent an email to Camille a few years back and got a pretty good response. She's very knowledgeable about the island's history.

I haven't read Mabou Pioneers in its entirety, but I did get some important information from it, namely the record of my MacLeods' departure from Scotland in 1843 (along with Duncan's twin sister Flora and her husband Alex Morrison).

Another good resource is J.L. MacDougall's History of Inverness County, which can be found online (the whole thing!) at http://www.electricscotland.com/canada/inverness/

I've found a number of my ancestors in there; you probably will too! :)

Jordan,

I just found this online:

In 1843 the McLeans arrived from Arisaig; the McLeods and Angus McIsaac, tailor from Eigg; Hugh Stuart from Moidart; John Gillis (Mac Rughail Ruaidh); Hugh Gillis (Alex. Ban); Archy Gillis, Ban, and his two sons Donald and Duncan - Sandy came nine years before - from Morar.

The Angus MacIsaac mentioned as arriving with the MacLeods was my g-g-g-g-grandfather's brother. I just learned of him today while snooping around the web. I just read "Eigg, the Story of an Island" by Camille Dressler. Interesting read, but no info on my line of MacIsaacs - I think that I remember seeing the name of Duncan McLeod, though. I am wondering if Anne McLeod may have been a cousin to Angus and his brothers. I need to buy a copy of Mabou Pioneers. Have you read it? I wonder if I should buy both volumes? Anyway, just thought it was sort of interesting that your journal here led me to find info that linked our ancestors. Definitely a small world! Oh, and I cracked up when I saw the "Officers Mopey and Dopey" photo of you and your brother - too funny! Reminded me of some of the shots we get of our son. Talk to you later, Andrew

Jordan,

sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I forgot to come check the site to see if you replied to my post! Anyway, I hope all is well on your side of the globe, and thanks so much for your offer to "keep your eyes peeled" with regard to family history info. I have seen that excel document, but I appreciate your tip nonetheless. Thanks so much!

You know, I hadn't noticed that sword in the rafters until you pointed it out. Brilliant!

Lachlan and Catherine appear in a big Excel file that lists people on Eigg that can be found here, though I suspect it doesn't contain any information you didn't already have (not only that, it's a bit confusing as well). If I come across them anywhere else, I'll be sure to let you know!

Jordan,

I have enjoyed reading your entries here! Really interesting to read about another family from Eigg and their experiences. It's cool you used the Lucas painting, too! I always loved that he painted the basket-hilt sword that has been hidden in the rafters over the horse! Sneaky! I am trying to find info about my g-g-g-g-grandfather Lachlan/Lauchlin Mor MacIsaac, son of Ruairidh MacIsaac. Lauchie married Catherine MacDonald on Eigg in 1818 and they emigrated to Antigonish (Eigg Mountain/Maple Ridge) in 1823. I don't know much else about them, yet, so I am enjoying reading about their neighbors and contemporaries, which is giving me a great sense of what they would have been experiencing. Thanks for sharing your stories and keep up the great writing! Sincerely, Andrew Beachum -- Vancouver, Washington
