I wish I could say Alisdair never wins pillow fights against me. He does lose most of the time and for most of the obvious reasons. But last night we were having a good brawl in my room when suddenly he stopped, looked wide-eyed at the TV behind me (which I swear is going to burn out from all the Ultraman videos), pointed frantically and said, “Daddy, look!” Naturally, I lowered my pillow and turned my head. Out of the corner of my eye I could see his pillow coming for me. I was so impressed that he’d thought of that, and even more impressed that he’d kind of pulled it off, that I let him whack me in the head. We both laughed like…well, kids.
I’ll have to watch this kid.

Oh, so I’m OBVIOUS now, am I?
Sneaky kid. I love it.
Haha no, but that phrase took up way less space than ‘for all the same reasons that a certain boy in my hometown always loses to his father’. Well, perhaps I could have just gone with that.
My 4 year old boy used to be quite good in English (for a 4 year old). That because he used to love watching the Play House Disney Channel. You know what I mean. Pocoyo, Higgly Town Heroes, Bob the Builder, Thomas the Train etc.
But that’s before he discovered Astro Ceria. Now it’s all Ultraman and Digimon and AstroBoy and etc. His Malay is getting better but he doesn’t “speaking” as much.
On the flipside…
In Ultraman, you know when everytime when the anti-monster team fighter planes shoots their rockets and lasers and after the smoke clears away, the monster is still there alive and unscathed, they always screams out, “TAK GUNA!!!” (To those no -Malay speakers, it’s literally means, “USELLESS”, but figuratively, it might as well be, “USELESS PIECE OF S**T!!!”
So, now whenever my boy gets frustrated about something, that’s what he says.
He crashes the car in the Playstation game, “TAK GUNA!!!”
He can’t seem to put his pants on properly, “TAK GUNA!!!”
His little sister took away his toys from him, “TAK GUNA!!!”
His Ultraman Doll loses a limb, “TAK GUNA!!!”
His aunt gave him only $1 for Raya, “TAK GUNA!!!” (Just kidding, made that one up)
Man, I hate Ultraman.
Ben: Ultraman is driving me nuts too. If Alisdair wants to watch TV, I’d prefer he watch nothing but Playhouse Disney. Pocoyo, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Bob the Builder, Word World, Little Einsteins…he loves them all. But lately all he wants to watch is Ultraman. He’s obsessed! And that means everywhere we go we have to deal with a screaming toddler who desperately wants one of those horrendously cheap Ultraman toys that really do seem to be everywhere. We caved in and bought him one at Metro Point in Kajang not long ago; within minutes the red paint was all over his little hands. And the toy even had a little button in the back that would light up a red light on Ultraman’s chest, a light that turned out to be pretty much the same as what you’d find on a laser pointer. Lucky for us Ultraman’s head and legs came off within hours of purchase, and Al moved on to other playthings.
How the heck do these toys even make it into the country?
I thought my son has been the only one screaming “TAK GUNA!” and throwing “BOLA API!”
I used to watch Ultraman when i was his age and growing up, but how come I don’t remember screaming TAK GUNA. Is this just because it is the latest version and the stupid translator cannot use other words?
My daughter also has a thing for ultraman. Because i cannot stand how the translators sound, i always switch the language to the original japanese!
We try not to let Al watch Ultraman on TV (like I said, he usually watches Playhouse Disney). He almost always watches it on a VCD (the same one over and over again), which for some reason is only in Chinese. But he was made in China, so it’s all good. Maybe he’ll pick some of it up. I even watch it with him sometimes to see if I can pick any up myself. I was so tickled last week when one of the characters yelled “Wei shenme shi wo!” and I knew he was saying “Why me?!” I wouldn’t be surprised if Al begins to understand. I guess we’ll know if he gets frustrated with something and yells the Chinese version of ‘Tak guna!’
What better entertainment we have for kids on Malaysian TV other than Japanese cartoons and manga.
I remember when I was a kid, there were ‘Ultraman telinga bulat’ and ‘Ultraman telinga kotak’ and one of them was mine, the other was my brother’s. And then there was ‘Ksatria Baja Hitam’ and ‘Gaban’, Toriton, Tosho Daemos. There were more cartoons in those years my brother and I were pretty addicted to TV. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday), we got up early just to turn on the TV and watch cartoon programs in a row. Our parents were worried about our addiction to TV. Boarding school kept me away from TV. Now, I have Thundercats, MASK and Transformers on my hard disks!
P/S: As for the toys, you’d better make sure the Ultraman is not melamine!
There’s a little boy I know that banged his forehead accidentally at a table’s corner and got this 1 inch reddish mark that turn bluish a few days later. His mom said he cried just a bit and later when he saw himself in the mirror he became excited and said ‘ I look like ultraman, mom, yeah…’
Hope he won’t try to bang his head purposely to get the mark..
Alia: I’m convinced that inside the head of every small boy there is a special magnet which is attracted not only to metal but to any hard surface. If I had a nickel for every time Alisdair whacked his head on a wall/floor/table/etc. I’d be able to buy a bungalow.
