Feeling Foreign Today

Over at Lim Kit Siang’s blog there’s an interesting letter about the frustrations faced by foreign spouses in Malaysia. I didn’t write it but I’ve definitely experienced many of those frustrations myself.

It’s certainly worth a look.

  1. i have read that post at LKS’s site. I felt terribly sorry for you, and to all foreign spouses.

At times one might wonder, does it worth it to go through all that just to stay in Malaysia? I definitely salute your effort, for the fact that things would seem to be so much better if you and your family stay in Canada.

  2. I’ve heard about this many times before and at school, we got quite a few application for work from foreigners but we can’t hire them because of the hassle that the school has to go through. It is such a different experience when I was in the U.S. where everything is much easier and they treat you well and nobody have to pay ‘coffee money’ to the govt officers involved to get things done.
Sometimes I feel ashamed when these involved people who claim they are muslims but their act is not islamic at all….

Hmmm, should I reconsider marrying a Turkish girl or should I celibate?

  4. Applause to this writer, voicing out what we locals (married to foreign spouses) have to endure and tolerate when it’s just unecessary.

What more can we do other than bringing it up again and again in writing. Sigh.

  5. Well, I’m outta here anyway, after 5 years. Had enough. Off to Perth for work and to earn money, not pittance. Now the petrol price is gonna skyrocket, I think I won’t be the only one looking to leave!

  6. No hard feelings towards your average Malaysian though! Just a government which is working against it’s own people…sigh. Stay with it guys, I’ll be keeping an eye on things anyway from Oz.

    Dear Jordan,

I am so sorry to hear about your plight. I know you like the country and in many ways have contributed to its cultural life. You put up with all the small mindedness and skull-drudgery of being a foreign spouse.

To quote lines from The Desiderata:

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
    no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.

“Here” is the world. At the end of the day, the (rest of the) world is your oyster. If Malaysia fails you then up sticks and go elsewhere. If Malaysia cannot cope with the globalized world then it is her lost.

    Good luck all the same
